Bruce Richman is a dedicated HIV/AIDS activist and the visionary behind the Prevention Access Campaign, famously known for its “Undetectable = Untransmittable” (U=U) campaign. Diagnosed with HIV in 2003, Bruce faced a tumultuous journey marked by fear, stigma, and bouts of depression. His experience is a testament to the emotional and psychological challenges that often accompany an HIV diagnosis.
In 2012, Bruce discovered a groundbreaking truth: individuals living with HIV who are on effective antiretroviral therapy and have an undetectable viral load cannot sexually transmit the virus. This revelation was life-altering for Bruce. It not only reshaped his understanding of his own condition but also ignited a passionate drive to spread this crucial message to others.
Inspired by this transformative knowledge, Bruce launched the U=U campaign in 2016 through the Prevention Access Campaign. The campaign underscores the dual benefits of maintaining an undetectable viral load: safeguarding the health of people living with HIV and preventing the transmission of the virus. The U=U initiative has received overwhelming global support, reshaping public health policies and significantly reducing HIV-related stigma. Today, the U=U message is embraced by numerous organizations and governments around the world.
Bruce’s relentless advocacy has been widely acclaimed for its profound impact on public health and HIV prevention. He continues to be a powerful voice in the battle against HIV stigma, championing the well-being and dignity of people living with HIV.
