My name is Anghel Nicolae. I was born in Bucharest,…
Meet Sebastian, a Romanian individual who has been living with HIV since the age of 16. Over the years, Sebastian has become an inspiration and advocate for many others facing similar challenges. In 2020, he launched a YouTube channel to educate people about living with HIV and to discuss topics that should be approached with sensitivity when speaking to those affected by the virus. His channel eventually evolved into a supportive community for people living with HIV.
Sebastian’s life and story have profoundly influenced artistic works that highlight his journey and the broader experience of living with HIV today. He openly shares his approach to managing the virus, emphasizing resilience and the importance of personal choice in navigating life’s difficulties. His philosophy is beautifully encapsulated in his metaphorical self-description as “a flower,” symbolizing growth, beauty, and resilience in the face of adversity.
While living in Romania, Sebastian applied for a job at a bank. During his interview, he disclosed his HIV status to the interviewers. Despite initially being told he got the job, he was informed two weeks later that the offer had been rescinded. This experience marked a turning point for Sebastian, highlighting the need for change.
Sebastian works as an executive assistant at Amazon and as a project director at Glamazon, their LGBTQI+ Affinity Group. Sebastian strongly believes that no one should have to face these challenges alone. He is now collaborating with the Terrence Higgins Trust to deliver HIV awareness sessions across Amazon sites in the UK. Sebastian emphasizes that people with chronic conditions should not feel confined when life offers many opportunities.
Inspired by Sebastian’s story, Amazon has developed a comprehensive checklist to assist managers in having supportive and informed conversations with employees. This initiative has already been implemented globally, reflecting Amazon’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive work environment.
